The Patriarchate of Romania has expressed its pastoral concern regarding the organisation of a parade in Bucharest dedicated to promoting diversity in sexual orientation. In a social and spiritual context which, as the Patriarchate notes, calls for balance, discernment, and responsibility, such an event is deemed inappropriate.
As part of its mission to safeguard and transmit Christian teachings, the Orthodox Church of Romania emphasises that the family, based on marriage between a man and a woman for procreation, is a gift and blessing from God. It is also the foundation of communal life and the education of younger generations. From this perspective, the Church notes that any public event promoting models that differ from this teaching may cause concern and may not be accepted.
Believing that social peace and mutual respect are essential for the common good, the Romanian Patriarchate points out that events such as Bucharest Pride may intensify confusion about spiritual values in a society already facing challenges such as demographic decline and social instability.
At the same time, it emphasises, with pastoral sensitivity, that Orthodox Christians should characterise themselves through peace, prayer, and respect for the dignity of every human being. The Patriarchate also stresses that it does not support or encourage any form of offensive speech, defamation, or violence, as these are contrary to the Gospel of Christ’s love.
Faced with the challenges of the present day, the Patriarchate calls on the clergy and the laity to intensify their prayers and cultivate the values of the Christian faith within the family, the parish, and wider society.
