The Patriarchate of Bulgaria welcomes the introduction of the subject “Religion – Orthodoxy” as a mandatory part of the Bulgarian educational system with profound spiritual joy and gratitude. This is a historic step for the country.
This decision carries deep spiritual and cultural significance. It aims to strengthen the Christian upbringing of children and young people and revive a long-standing tradition interrupted during the atheistic regime.
The Patriarchate of Bulgaria has announced the following:
With particular spiritual joy and satisfaction, the Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church — Patriarchate of Bulgaria welcomes the significant progress made in realizing a long-awaited and highly desired event for our Orthodox faithful: the introduction of the subject “Religion — Orthodoxy” as a compulsory part of secondary education in Bulgaria.
We commend the prudence and responsibility demonstrated during the initial vote on the amendments to the Law on Preschool and School Education in the National Assembly of the Republic of Bulgaria. These changes will allow all children and young people in our beloved homeland to experience the richness of Holy Orthodoxy, learn the truths of the Orthodox Christian faith, and be introduced to the eternal Christian virtues of Christ.
Thus, the tradition of education and moral upbringing that was interrupted during the atheistic period will be restored—a tradition that has nurtured our ancestors since antiquity and through the Renaissance to the present day.
We hope and pray to Almighty God that this process will be completed successfully. The Holy Church has devoted and will continue to devote every possible effort to the education and Christian formation of young people and all our beloved brothers and sisters in Christ.
May God’s blessings and mercy accompany all who participate in, collaborate on, and support this God-pleasing work.
