Patriarch Porfirije of Serbia, officiated a memorial service on November 20, 2024, at the Temple of Saint Sava in Vračar, commemorating his predecessor, the late Patriarch Irinej of Serbia, who, on this day four years ago, fell asleep in the Lord.
On this solemn occasion, Patriarch Porfirije stated: “Patriarch Irinej, without a doubt, safeguarded and passed on to us the sacred legacy he received. It is our duty to preserve and transmit this faith to future generations, for as the Scripture says: Whoever keeps My word shall never see death (John 8:51). Despite our human failings, by anchoring ourselves in faith in Christ, we will always find the right path, guided by the teachings of the blessed Patriarch Irinej. He was a true representative of authentic Serbs, an Orthodox monk of the old tradition, and one of the finest examples of our people. He was a monk, a shepherd, a Christian, and a Serb.
We pray for his eternal salvation, and I firmly believe that we have his prayers and intercession before the throne of God for the much-needed unity, peace, and harmony among us. Eternal memory and the Heavenly Kingdom to the blessed Patriarch Irinej,” concluded Patriarch Porfirije.
