The first anniversary of the opening of the historic church of Saints Constantine and Helen took place with humility and strict protection measures for COVID-19.
The Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa Theodore II spoke with enthusiasm about the President of the Greek Community of Cairo Christos Kavalis and the Management Committee who give a dynamic presence in all ecclesiastical events. The Patriarch also spoke with warmth about the Great Benefactor of the Greek Community of Cairo Aikaterini Sofianou-Belefanti.
“My dear President, my dear Christos, today belongs to our Community again. A whole year has passed since we had this great joy. My mind travelled to this Divine Liturgy. Our High Priests, when we were proud of our Church that has become so beautiful after its so successful renovation. So I came from Alexandria today to remember again in this beautiful nest of the spirit, these beautiful moments”, said Patriarch Theodore.
Patriarch Theodore in the presence of the Ambassador of Cyprus in Cairo Omiros Mavromatis spoke about his recent visit to Cyprus and the meetings he had – among others – with the Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades and the new Consul General of Greece in Cairo Maria Zisi. He wished the teachers who attended a good and blessed year, assured them that the Greek Community of Cairo will be by their side and invited them to pass on to the students the treasure of the Greek language and humanity.
Patriarch Theodore also thanked Metropolitan Nicodemus of Memphis for his contribution. After the end of the Divine Liturgy, Patriarch Theodore offered the Cypriot Ambassador and the Consul General of Greece symbolic gifts. He also honored the benefactor Henry Adam with the Holy Cross of the Apostle Mark.
The Divine Liturgy was attended by the President of the Greek Comunity of Cairo Christos Kavalis, the Treasurer Antonis Iordanidis, the Community Commissioners Leonidas Fontrie and Stelios Chalkias and the General Director Ioanna Kardasi. Also present were the Deputy Coordinator of Education of North Africa and the Middle East Sotiria Beta and the former Director of Achillopouleio School Angeliki Tsiadimi, as well as the President of the Association of Greek Alumni of Ampeteios School, Alekos Kazamias.
