On Wednesday, August 5, 2026, the eve of the great Feast of the Transfiguration of the Savior, Pope and Patriarch Theodore II of Alexandria and All Africa presided over the Great Patriarchal Vespers, celebrated at the Patriarchal Church of St. Nicholas in Ibrahimieh, Alexandria. He was flanked by Metropolitan Germanos of Tamiathis and Bishop Damaskinos of Mareotis, Patriarchal Vicar of Alexandria, in the presence of a large congregation.

Following the Litany and the blessing of the grapes, one of the most moving and historic moments for the local Church took place. The Patriarch performed the monastic tonsure of two young Egyptian women who, after a long period of spiritual preparation, testing, and obedience, dedicated their lives entirely to Christ the Savior, receiving the monastic names Xenia and Matrona.

The first of the two nuns took the name Xenia, in honor of both St. Xenia and the late Elder Xenia of Aegina, the first Abbess of the Holy Monastery of the Holy Trinity in Aegina, founded by St. Nektarios. The blessed Elder Xenia, though deprived of physical sight, was one of the first and most cherished spiritual daughters of the Saint, distinguished for her deep humility, obedience, and holy life, leaving an indelible legacy in the history of women’s monasticism.

The second nun took the name Matrona, in honor of St. Matrona the Blind of Russia, who, although born blind, was granted by God the gift of spiritual insight, unceasing prayer, and the working of miracles, becoming a shining example of unwavering faith, patience, and complete trust in God’s will.

The moment took on particular historical significance when the Patriarch announced the elevation of the Patriarchal Church of St. Nicholas to a Women’s Holy Patriarchal Monastery, marking the beginning of a new monastic sisterhood within the Alexandrian Throne. This decision represents a significant milestone in the history of the Patriarchate, testifying that monasticism continues to flourish and inspire new souls even on African soil.

Visibly moved as a father, the Patriarch addressed the two new nuns, emphasizing that from this sacred moment they belong entirely to Christ and His Church. He urged them to guard as a precious treasure obedience, humility, unceasing prayer, and selfless love, so that their lives might stand as an enduring witness to the Gospel and a source of comfort for everyone who comes to the Monastery.

He gave particular attention to the ministry the new Monastery is called to develop toward suffering humanity. He noted that one of the two nuns is a dentist, and expressed his wish that a model health center be established on the Monastery grounds, so that it might become a true “clinic for souls and bodies,” where prayer would go hand in hand with practical love and charity toward every person.

The Patriarch also expressed his deep gratitude to the devout parents of the two nuns, who raised them “in the discipline and instruction of the Lord,” cultivating in their hearts faith and love for the Church, enabling them to freely respond to their divine calling. He further thanked all those who, in any way, contributed to the spiritual preparation and support of the two new nuns.

The festive service concluded in an atmosphere of deep spiritual emotion and doxology to God. The faithful who filled the church witnessed a historic moment for the Patriarchate of Alexandria, offering fervent prayers that the newly established Women’s Holy Patriarchal Monastery of St. Nicholas will become a beacon of prayer, holiness, love, and service, bearing living witness to Christ in Alexandria, in Egypt, and across the entire African continent.
