LAST UPDATE: 19:35
The “Evangelismos” Hospital, where Archbishop Anastasios of Albania is being treated, has issued a medical bulletin regarding the progress of his health.
The bulletin states: “His Beatitude Archbishop Anastasios of Albania underwent emergency surgery to treat a hemorrhagic episode. He was subsequently re-intubated and transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The next 48 hours are considered critical.
On Friday afternoon, Archbishop Anastasios was rushed to the operating room where he underwent a gastrointestinal procedure performed by Dr. Stelios Kapiris, director of the hospital’s Third Surgical Department. The surgery was completed shortly before 6:30 p.m. and His Beatitude will remain in the Intensive Care Unit.
According to reports, the Archbishop had been suffering from gastrointestinal bleeding, which doctors at “Evangelismos” have been trying to control since his admission. The 96-year-old hierarch experienced a rapid deterioration in his condition, requiring intubation and transfer to the ICU in the past few hours.
Initially, his condition was stable and he was able to communicate effectively without requiring intubation or intensive care. However, his condition has deteriorated in the last few hours and is now considered critical.
Archbishop Anastasios of Albania was admitted to a hospital in Tirana on December 30 due to a virus that had been troubling him. His health condition worsened, and on January 3, it was deemed necessary to transfer him to Athens.
Further updates regarding the Archbishop’s health will be provided by his attending physicians and the Archbishopric of Albania.
