The election of the new Metropolitans for the Metropolises of Kydonia and Apokoronas (Chania) and of Lambi, Syvritos, and Sfakia (Spili) brings to an end a long and arduous chapter for the Church of Crete.
According to the official announcement following the completion of the voting at the Metropolitan Church of Saint Minas in Heraklion, Archimandrite Titus Tambakakis, Protosyncellus of the Metropolis of Petra and Chersonissos, was unanimously elected Metropolitan of Kydonia and Apokoronas. Meanwhile, Archimandrite Ioakeim Karandinós, Protosyncellus of the Metropolis of Gortyna and Arkadia, was elected Metropolitan of Lambi, Syvritos, and Sfakia by an overwhelming majority of 8 votes to 1.
In addition to the members of the Holy Provincial Synod of the Church of Crete, the election process was also attended by representatives of the Patriarchal Exarchate: Elder Metropolitan Emmanuel of Chalcedon and Metropolitan Arsenios of Austria, who were appointed by the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
