The Metropolitan of Austria at the Easter Season Reception at the Austrian Chancellery

On Tuesday, May 6, 2025, Metropolitan Arsenios of Austria attended the Easter Reception hosted by the Federal Chancellery of the Republic of Austria, following an invitation extended by Minister Caroline Plakolm, who is responsible for religious affairs.

This reception has been institutionalized and brings together all religious leaders of the recognized faith communities in Austria.

Metropolitan Arsenios participates in his capacity as President of the Episcopal Conference of Orthodox Bishops in Austria and as the official interlocutor of the Austrian state.

The event was originally scheduled for April 28, but had to be postponed to May 6 due to the passing of Pope Francis of Rome. In her statement, the Minister emphasized that religions provide structure throughout the year, offer hope in daily life, and form a cornerstone of our traditions. One such tradition is the annual gathering of representatives from the 16 officially recognized religious communities in Austria at the Chancellery’s reception. This open dialogue within society on matters of faith is something Austria is proud of. “It is important,” she said, “to speak once again about religion.”

In his address, Metropolitan Arsenios spoke about the spiritual significance of the Easter celebration, emphasizing that it is more than a remembrance—it should be a lived experience. The Resurrection signifies the transcendence of death and opens the way to a relationship with the Absolute. This experience fundamentally transforms human existence, revealing new paths—such as love, respect, and shared responsibility. From the message of the Resurrection arises a duty to safeguard the natural environment and to serve one’s neighbor. Especially in our current era, when society is shaken by conflicts, the message of the Resurrection must serve as a call to awareness and solidarity in coexistence.

During the reception, the Metropolitan also had the opportunity to engage in discussions with representatives of other faiths on current issues in Austria and to speak with Minister Plakolm and other government officials about matters concerning the Orthodox Church in Austria.
