In honor of World Greek Language Day, the Holy Metropolis of Derkoi pays tribute to our language, which is one of the most important carriers of Hellenism’s spiritual, cultural, and historical identity.
“The Greek language is the foundation of our Orthodox faith. It is the language in which the New Testament was written and the theology of the Church was articulated, as well as the language through which the salvific message of Christ was conveyed to the peoples,” the Metropolis emphasizes.
Concerned for the youth of Constantinople, the Holy Metropolis of Derkoi continuously strives to preserve and teach the Greek language. They offer free online Greek courses and catechetical work in Greek so that the language may remain alive in worship, education, and everyday life.
Throughout the centuries, the Greek language has been the vehicle of philosophy, education, and science while serving as the language of the Fathers of the Church, the Ecumenical Councils, and ecclesiastical literature. Through it, the spiritual experience of Orthodoxy has been preserved, and the historical continuity of Hellenism has been maintained.
By honoring the Greek language today, we honor our faith, our tradition, and the future of our children. It is our collective responsibility to safeguard the language and pass it on as a living heritage of faith and life,” concludes the Holy Metropolis of Derkoi.
