The memory of the New Martyr Saint Dimos from Long Bridge of Eastern Thrace was celebrated at the Didimoticho Castle on Wednesday, April 10, the day of his martyrdom.
The Long Bridge (Uzunköprü), the birthplace of the saint, is located across from Didimoticho, just a few kilometers from the Evros River.
Metropolitan Damaskinos of Didimoticho, Orestiada and Soufli officiated the Divine Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts while the pupils of the 1st Primary School of Didimoticho attended the Liturgy at the Cathedral of St. Athanasios, where the icon of the saint is kept.
The Metropolitan, addressing the pupils, stressed that the church honours for centuries “the sacrifices and prayers of its anonymous and eponymous saints. The New Martyrs put up the most gentle and effective resistance to the non-christian ruler by sacrificing themselves.”
He called on the pupils not to make concessions in their daily life but to be inspired by the martyrs of the Church and especially by the example of the New Martyr Saint Dimos.
