“I cannot see any connection of Hagia Sophia issue with the German government, so I do not want to comment on it,” said Deputy Government spokeswoman for the German Federal Government Ulrike Demmer after a question made by ANA-MPA regarding the statements of Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan to convert Hagia Sophia to a mosque.
Ulrilke Demer also refused to answer whether the German government’s stance resulted from the fact that the local elections were to be held in Turkey on Sunday.
However, the issue of the statements of the Turkish President on Hagia Sophia is now extensively covered by the German press, with articles in the Die Welt, Bild, and Der Spiegel, which link Erdogan’s statements to the local elections on Sunday.
