On Tuesday, February 5, 2019, the Holy Synod of the Autocephalous Church of Ukraine met for the first time.
The session of the Holy Synod was held at the Cathedral of Hagia Sophia in Kiev, chaired by Metropolitan Epiphanius.
Eleven Hierarchs of the new Church, as well as the honorary “Patriarch” Filaret (Denysenko) of Kiev and Metropolitan Makarius (Maletic) participated in the Holy Synod.
It should be also noted that the honorary “Patriarch” Filaret did not participate in the enthronement of the new Metropolitan of Kiev, Epiphanius, since he showed arrhythmia and was hospitalized in a clinic in Kiev.
It is characteristic that during the session of the Holy Synod, the honorary “Patriarch” Filaret is on the right of Metropolitan Epiphanius, wearing normally a Patriarchal cocoon.
However, Bishop Daniel of Pamphilon of the Ecumenical Patriarchate said that “Constantinople does not mind that Filaret calls himself Patriarch, as he uses that title only within Ukraine.”
