The Feast of Saint David in Wales

The Feast of Saint David in Wales

On the 1st of March, the Orthodox English-speaking community of the Three Hierarchs in the city of Lampeter honoured the memory of Saint David, the Patron Saint of Wales, with full ecclesiastical splendour.

The splendid celebration was presided over by Bishop Maximos of Melitene, who, through his constant pastoral presence, supports the Orthodox community of the area, offering spiritual guidance and assistance. The Bishop delivered the Divine Word in English, demonstrating the Church’s constant care for her children wherever they may be in the world, and conveyed the paternal greetings and blessings of His Eminence Archbishop Nikitas of Thyateira and Great Britain.

At the end of the ceremony, an official reception was held, during which the Bishop met with many members of the community, strengthening bonds of solidarity. As a token of love and gratitude, the community presented the Bishop with a handmade holy icon of Saint David.

Wales, the land of legends and heroic traditions, is bathed in the light of the feast of its patron saint, Saint David, on 1 March each year. Welsh people all over the world honour the memory of this humble ascetic, and luminary by reviving traditional customs and taking part in festive events that highlight the richness of the Welsh cultural heritage.

Homes and streets are decorated with the national symbols of the country, the daffodil and the leek, which, according to tradition, are closely associated with the saint’s life and miracles. By holding these symbols with reverence, the Welsh people express their devotion to their ancestral values and national identity.

As part of the celebrations, many engage in the preparation and enjoyment of traditional food, which is an inseparable part of Welsh tradition. Music also plays a central role, with traditional songs and dances echoing throughout the city, filling the atmosphere with joy and vitality.
