The European Council condemned Turkey’s move to turn Hagia Sophia into a mosque.
The head of the Greek Delegation Dora Bakoyannis in her post on the internet stated that both the Greek and the Cypriot delegation for months have been raising awareness and mobilizing the members of the Parliamentary Assembly for the value of Hagia Sophia, as a world heritage site, symbol of religious freedom and peaceful coexistence of cultures, religions and peoples.
“At today’s meeting of the Culture Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the European Council, Turkey’s unilateral decision was condemned as unacceptable and incomprehensible, as a move of division and discrimination contrary to all the principles of the Council.
“Europe takes a stand against Turkey’s systematic policy of violating democratic principles and values,” Bakoyannis added.
