The European Union called on Russia today to refrain from issuing nuclear threats and to avoid any actions that could trigger a new arms race.
Responding to questions regarding Russian President Vladimir Putin’s order to resume nuclear testing, EU foreign policy spokesperson Anouar El Aouni said the announcement “moves in the wrong direction,” emphasizing that “Russia must refrain from steps that could negatively affect the threshold for the use of nuclear weapons.”
The spokesperson reiterated that “Russia must fully comply with its international obligations and commitments, including the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT),” reminding that “along with the five nuclear-armed states, Russia has signed and reaffirmed the principle that a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought.”
“The EU urges Russia to abstain from nuclear threats and calls on all parties involved to avoid actions that could ignite a new arms race,” El Aouni concluded, noting that “such behavior undermines global stability and the hard-won progress achieved in nuclear disarmament since the end of the Cold War.”
