The Church of Cyprus no longer considers the issue concerning former Metropolitan Tychikos as an active matter, according to the spokesman of the Archdiocese of Cyprus, Christakis Efstathiou.
Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), Efstathiou stated that the Church has already moved beyond the issue and is now focusing on the next steps, which include the redrafting of the Church’s constitutional charter and, subsequently, the process for electing a new Metropolitan of Paphos.
He clarified that, from the Church’s perspective, “there is no issue of Tychikos,” adding that the matter has effectively been left behind as attention shifts to institutional and administrative procedures. According to Efstathiou, the Church is now concentrating on revising the statutory charter and on preparing the framework that will allow the election of a new metropolitan.
When asked about developments regarding an appeal submitted to the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, the spokesman said that the second appeal filed by the former Metropolitan of Paphos, Tychikos of Paphos, does not concern the Church of Cyprus. He described it as a personal matter that does not affect the Church’s ongoing procedures or planning.
He also recalled that the Supreme Court of Cyprus ruled on February 3, 2026, rejecting a request by the former metropolitan for an extension of the deadline to file an application seeking permission to issue prerogative writs against decisions made by both the Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus and the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
Through his application, the former metropolitan had sought additional time to pursue legal action aimed at overturning the decision of the Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus, dated May 22, 2025, which declared him deposed from his position, as well as the decision of the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate on October 17, 2025, which upheld the original ruling.
Although the case had attracted significant public attention in recent months, the Church of Cyprus now considers the matter closed and is directing its focus toward the forthcoming institutional steps concerning the Metropolis of Paphos and the broader functioning of the Church.
