With great solemnity and deep spiritual emotion, the Vespers of Forgiveness was celebrated on the evening of Sunday, March 2, 2025, at the Holy Cathedral of Hagia Sophia in Bayswater, London, marking the beginning of the Holy and Great Lent.
Archbishop Nikitas of Thyateira and Great Britain presided over the sacred service, which was accompanied by Bishop Iakovos of Claudiopolis and Archimandrite Emilianos Papadakis. As the commencement of Holy and Great Lent is traditionally observed, a large number of priests from the wider London area participated in the service.
Addressing the congregation, the Archbishop extended heartfelt wishes for a deeply spiritual and fruitful Lenten period. In his inspired sermon, he emphasized the paramount importance of forgiveness in the life of an Orthodox Christian, urging the faithful to embrace this sacred period with humility, a spirit of reconciliation, and renewed spiritual devotion. He highlighted the necessity of sincere repentance and spiritual vigilance, which serve as fundamental pillars of the Christian journey, while stressing the significance of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving as spiritual purification and elevation.
At the end of his sermon, the traditional ceremony of mutual forgiveness followed, during which the faithful approached the Archbishop and the clergy to exchange the kiss of forgiveness and Christian love. The atmosphere was one of reverence and spiritual uplift.
On the same evening, Vespers of Forgiveness was also celebrated in the West Midlands region at the Holy Church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour in Coventry. The service was presided over by Bishop Maximos of Melitene, assisted by a considerable number of clergy from Birmingham, Nottingham, Coventry and other neighbouring cities.
During the service, spiritual reflections on the meaning of forgiveness were given in English for the benefit of the congregation. The service concluded with the customary ceremony of mutual forgiveness.
The parish of Coventry expressed its deep gratitude to Bishop Maximos for his pastoral care, and a simple Lenten reception was offered by the parish.
