On the evening of Holy Thursday, April 9, Archbishop Makarios of Australia presided over the Service of the Holy Passion of our Lord at the Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Theotokos in Sydney.
During the service, the Twelve Gospel readings were proclaimed by Archbishop Makarios, Bishop Christophoros of Kerasounta, Protosyncellus of the Holy Archdiocese and Dean of the Cathedral, Archimandrite Stephanos Tinikashvili, Fr. Dimitrios Karakiozis, and the Deacons Timotheos and Meleton.
In accordance with tradition, following the reading of the fifth Gospel, the procession of the Crucified took place within the Cathedral in an atmosphere of deep reverence. The Crucified was then placed at the center of the church, while the antiphon “Today He is hung upon the Tree” was chanted.
At the conclusion of the service, the Archbishop extended his paternal wishes and expressed his gratitude to the Consul General of Greece in Sydney, Georgios Skemperis, as well as to all the faithful who attended devoutly and remained until the dismissal of the solemn Service of the Holy and Immaculate Passion of our Lord.
