The new school year for the students of St Spyridon’s College in Sydney commenced with the traditional Service of Blessing, held at the Sports and Performing Arts Centre of the College’s Secondary School, in the presence of the entire school community—from Kindergarten to Year 12—as well as staff members, students’ families, the President of the Parish of St Spyridon, Elias Oikonomou, and other representatives of the Parish.
The service was presided over by Bishop Christophoros of Kerasounta, Protosyncellus of the Holy Archdiocese of Australia, assisted by Fr Stylianos Skoutas and Fr Stavros Ivanos. United in prayer, the school community sought God’s grace, guidance, and protection for the year ahead.
Conveying the message and paternal blessings of Archbishop Makarios of Australia, Bishop Christophoros reminded students and staff alike that every beginning in the life of the Church is strengthened through prayer, and that human endeavour bears fruit when illumined by the wisdom of God.
In his message, Archbishop Makarios of Australia expressed his “great spiritual joy” at the commencement of the new academic year, extending his warm wishes for a year rich in academic achievements and spiritual growth.
His message also included a reference to World Greek Language Day, highlighting the timeless value of the Greek language as a living bond with our faith, culture, and identity.
Addressing the students personally, His Grace spoke warmly of his visits to the College and encouraged all to remain connected to the life of the Church and the Holy Archdiocese, assuring them of his continued pastoral care and support.
In response, the Principal, Emilia Katsogianni, expressed the College’s sincere gratitude for the gracious presence of His Grace.
She noted that it was a particular honour for all to welcome him to the College, describing him not as a distant figure, but as a shepherd who has consistently shown love, care, and guidance toward the educational institution. At the same time, she highlighted the strong and enduring bond that unites the College, the Parish, and the Archdiocese.
The Service of Blessing marked a moment of spiritual renewal, protection, and the abiding presence of God at St Spyridon’s College. As the College embarks upon another year of learning and progress, the Blessing reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing students academically, spiritually, and culturally, firmly rooted in the life of the Orthodox Church.
