The New Year’s Eve event organized by the Holy Diocese of Perth on Tuesday, December 31, was a resounding success, attracting approximately 450 attendees. Held outdoors under the stars, the celebration took place across from the Church of Saint Nektarios, which remained open throughout the night, offering attendees the opportunity to visit and pray.
The event saw a significant turnout of young families, emphasizing its primary purpose: to unite the Greek community of Perth in welcoming the New Year.
The celebration began with a heartfelt New Year’s blessing from His Grace Bishop Elpidios of Perth, who extended greetings on behalf of Archbishop Makarios of Australia.
The cultural program opened with a captivating performance by the dance group of the Evangelismos Institute of Greek Language and Culture. Guests enjoyed delicious, authentic Greek cuisine prepared by Effie and Dimitris from The Greek Bahari. The four-member band The Ammos, visiting from Sydney, entertained the crowd with traditional Greek music, adding to the festive ambiance.
As the clock struck midnight, the bells of Saint Nektarios Church rang joyfully, heralding the arrival of 2025.
During the evening, the 16 sponsors who supported the event were honored for their contributions. Bishop Elpidios, along with clergy, distributed the traditional Vasilopita to attendees. The lucky young recipient of the coin was awarded a special commemorative coin set issued by the Holy Archdiocese of Australia to mark its centenary. Additionally, every family received a 2025 Archdiocesan calendar as a gift.
This vibrant and well-attended celebration highlighted the unity and spirit of the Greek Orthodox community in Perth, creating a memorable start to the New Year.
