On 18 February 2019 the Orthodox Church of Ukraine announce that Metropolitan Mitrofan of Gorlovka and Slavyansk was detained and escorted to the Slavyansk town police department, according to information on the site of the Gorlovka province.
According to the Gorlovka press office, a standard document control was carried out in a Ukrainian checkpoint, after which it was announced that Metropolitan Mitrofan of Gorlovka and Slavyansk had been detained “for identification”.
Asked about the reasons that led to the detention, a police officer replied that accordance with the Ukrainian law the National Police is entitled to detain any person for three hours without charges.
A search was made to the hierarch and then he was escorted to the Slavyansk police station.
He was then interrogated by a magistrate and released. The Metropolitan stated: “I think it was an attempt by the authorities to put pressure on me”.
