Patriarch Porfirije of Serbia met on March 17, 2026, in the Patriarchal Residence in Belgrade with Tatjana Macura, Minister without Portfolio responsible for coordinating activities in the fields of gender equality, prevention of violence against women, and the economic and political empowerment of women.
The meeting took place in a constructive and open atmosphere, with both sides expressing readiness for joint action on issues of major social importance, particularly the prevention and suppression of violence, especially against women.
Participants emphasized that religious communities—and in particular the Serbian Orthodox Church—play an important role as partners in addressing such challenges.
According to research cited during the discussion, approximately 37% of victims of violence seek help from the Church, with 82% expressing satisfaction with the support they receive. In addition to the Church, victims most frequently turn to the police and social welfare centers.
Both sides agreed on the importance of further training clergy who are often approached by victims, so they can either provide appropriate assistance directly or guide individuals to specialized institutions in a timely manner.
Patriarch Porfirije highlighted the importance of cultivating a culture of respect, care, and solidarity, stressing that all forms of violence are contrary to fundamental Christian values and human dignity.
The discussion also addressed ways to enhance cooperation in supporting vulnerable groups, including single mothers and families with many children facing economic hardship. Particular attention was given to the role of the Church’s charitable organization, which has experience and capacity in providing effective assistance.
