The Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate proceeded with the canonization of Elder Amphilochios Makris of Patmos on August 29, 2018.
Saint Amphilochios Makris (born Athanasios Makris) was born on February 13, 1889, on Patmos.
He received the monastic tonsure on August 27, 1906, at the Holy Monastery of Saint John the Theologian, where he was given the name Amphilochios.
On March 23, 1913, at the age of 24, he was tonsured into the Great Schema at the Kathisma of Apollou by the ascetic and spiritual father Makarios Antoniadis of Samos.
He was ordained a deacon by Metropolitan Agathangelos of Kos on January 27, 1919, at the Church of Saint Nicholas in Kos, and a priest (presbyter) on Thomas Sunday, April 5 of the same year, by Metropolitan Konstantinos Vantzalis of Samos and Ikaria, at the Church of Saint Spyridon in Vathy.
He served as a priest of the Holy Monastery of Patmos from 1920 to 1926 and was appointed head of the Sacred Cave of the Apocalypse from 1926 to 1932.
On November 14, 1935, he was elected abbot of the Holy Monastery of Patmos, and in 1937, he founded the Holy Monastery of the Annunciation. During the years 1939–1940, he served as a priest at the Holy Shrine of Panagia Diasozousa.
Elder Amphilochios Makris reposed on Thursday, April 16, 1970, and was buried on April 17 in the cemetery of the Holy Monastery of the Annunciation.
Saint Amphilochios Makris was a friend and spiritual child of Saint Nektarios (commemorated on November 9). He was the spiritual father of many prominent figures of the Church, both Greek and foreign. He was an inspiration for missionary work in Africa and elsewhere, as figures such as the late Fr. Chrysostomos Papasarantopoulos and the hierarch of the Ecumenical Throne, Metropolitan Amphilochios (Tsoukos) of Ganos and Chora, were among his spiritual children.
