Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Patriarch Kirill of Moscow on the occasion of his name day, marked on the feast of Saint Cyril Equal-to-the-Apostles.
The Russian President emphasized the importance of Patriarch Kirill’s role in strengthening both inter-church and interreligious relations in Russia.
“Today we need your experience in building inter-church relations,” Putin said, adding that preserving unity among Russia’s multinational and multireligious population is “especially important” at the present time.
Putin also thanked Patriarch Kirill for his work and contribution to Russian society.
In response, Patriarch Kirill expressed gratitude for Putin’s remarks and leadership, particularly in matters concerning Church and religious life in Russia.
“You are a person who understands the importance of the religious factor,” Patriarch Kirill said, adding that religion has historically played a major role in consolidating society.
The Patriarch stated that Russia “has not lost its religious convictions or its faith,” describing the country as “a unique example of civilizational development” that preserves its traditions and faith while also advancing in science, culture, and sports.
Patriarch Kirill also credited Putin with making “an enormous contribution” to the country’s development.
