The Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church convened for a working session on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, in the “Patriarch Teoctist” Aula Magna of the Patriarchal Palace in Bucharest, under the chairmanship of Patriarch Daniel of Romania.
During the meeting, the Holy Synod approved the retirement of Metropolitan Petru Păduraru from his ministry as Archbishop of Chișinău, Metropolitan of Bessarabia, and Exarch of the Territories. The decision entails the conclusion of his administrative, liturgical, and pastoral responsibilities.
Metropolitan Petru has led the Metropolis of Bessarabia for many years, playing a significant role in the spiritual life and development of the Romanian Orthodox communities in the Republic of Moldova.
Following the approval of his retirement, the Chancellery of the Holy Synod was tasked with immediately initiating the statutory procedures required for the election of a new Archbishop of Chișinău, Metropolitan of Bessarabia, and Exarch of the Territories.
Further details regarding the election process are expected to be announced in accordance with the statutes and regulations of the Romanian Orthodox Church.
