The Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church, chaired by Patriarch Daniel, convened in Bucharest on September 29–30, 2025, and adopted a series of important pastoral, liturgical, and administrative decisions.
The meeting took place in the Aula Magna “Patriarch Teoctist” of the Patriarchal Palace.
Among the resolutions, the Synod approved the inclusion of several saints in the Church calendar, new feasts dedicated to miraculous icons of the Mother of God, and the official recognition of icons and texts for recently canonised saints, including eight holy women. The Synod also confirmed preparations for the consecration of the National Cathedral’s iconography, scheduled for October 26, 2025.
Institutional decisions included the approval of the Statute for the Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Ireland and Iceland, as well as the appointment of Archimandrite Ioan Meiu as Patriarchate Representative in the Holy Land. The Synod also addressed the financial situation of monks without income, resolving that their support will be covered by diocesan centres.
New Decisions of the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church
The Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church held its working session on Monday and Tuesday, September 29–30, 2025, in the “Patriarch Teoctist” Aula Magna of the Patriarchal Palace, under the chairmanship of Patriarch Daniel.
The Holy Synod adopted a series of decisions concerning pastoral and missionary activity, among which are the following:
- Took note of the stage of preparations for the consecration of the iconography of the National Cathedral, which will take place on Sunday, October 26, 2025.
- Approved the inclusion in the Church calendar of Saint Dionysius of Vatopedi at Colciu (May 11) and Saint Petronius of Prodromos Skete (February 24), along with their icons and liturgical texts.
- Approved the inclusion in the Synodal Synaxarion of the Romanian Orthodox Church of Saint Nikolai Velimirović, Bishop of Ohrid and Žiča (March 18), together with his icon and liturgical texts.
- Approved the institution and inclusion in the Synodal Synaxarion of the following feasts: the Veneration of the Icon of the Mother of God of Craiova (August 30) and the Veneration of the Icon of the Mother of God of Dintr-un Lemn Monastery (July 21), together with their liturgical texts.
- Took note of the current stage of drafting liturgical texts and painting icons for the 16 holy women (martyrs, nuns, rulers’ wives, mothers of saints, and confessors) canonised at the Synodal session of July 1–2, 2025, and approved the icons created for the veneration of: Holy Princess Maria Brâncoveanu (August 16), Venerable Philothea of Pasărea (April 12), Venerable Martyr Eulogia of Samurcășești (December 19), Venerable Elizabeth of Pasărea (June 5), Venerable Platonida of Argeș (September 26), Saint Anastasia Șaguna (December 1), Venerable Matrona of Hurezi (May 5), and Venerable Antonina of Tismana (December 23).
- Approved liturgical texts for the Service and Akathist of Saint Cornelius the Centurion (September 13) and for the Service of Saint Cyprian, Bishop of Carthage (September 13).
- Took note of legislative regulations regarding the situation of monks without income and their direct consequences, and approved that all diocesan centres cover their expenses from their own funds.
- Approved the Statute for the organisation and functioning of the Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Ireland and Iceland.
- Took note of the appointment of Archimandrite Ioan Meiu as Representative of the Romanian Patriarchate in the Holy Land and Superior of the Romanian Settlements in Jerusalem, Jericho, and the Jordan.
