Romanian Holy Synod approves new Saints and feasts ahead of National Cathedral consecration

The Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church, chaired by Patriarch Daniel, convened in Bucharest on September 29–30, 2025, and adopted a series of important pastoral, liturgical, and administrative decisions.

The meeting took place in the Aula Magna “Patriarch Teoctist” of the Patriarchal Palace.

Among the resolutions, the Synod approved the inclusion of several saints in the Church calendar, new feasts dedicated to miraculous icons of the Mother of God, and the official recognition of icons and texts for recently canonised saints, including eight holy women. The Synod also confirmed preparations for the consecration of the National Cathedral’s iconography, scheduled for October 26, 2025.

Institutional decisions included the approval of the Statute for the Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Ireland and Iceland, as well as the appointment of Archimandrite Ioan Meiu as Patriarchate Representative in the Holy Land. The Synod also addressed the financial situation of monks without income, resolving that their support will be covered by diocesan centres.

  • Took note of the current stage of drafting liturgical texts and painting icons for the 16 holy women (martyrs, nuns, rulers’ wives, mothers of saints, and confessors) canonised at the Synodal session of July 1–2, 2025, and approved the icons created for the veneration of: Holy Princess Maria Brâncoveanu (August 16), Venerable Philothea of Pasărea (April 12), Venerable Martyr Eulogia of Samurcășești (December 19), Venerable Elizabeth of Pasărea (June 5), Venerable Platonida of Argeș (September 26), Saint Anastasia Șaguna (December 1), Venerable Matrona of Hurezi (May 5), and Venerable Antonina of Tismana (December 23).
