Serious damages have been caused on Mount Athos since the last catastrophe that hit the region a month ago.
Some fear that the damage was so bad that a new main road may be partly constructed. Access to the monasteries has become very difficult, due to the collapse of the Dafni – Karyon main road. More especially, sketes and cells are located in the southern and most inaccessible part of Mount Athos, mainly on the side to Sithonia.
Following the instructions of the Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff, General Konstantinos Floros, the Commander of the III Army Corps of Engineers contacted the Deputy Governor of Mount Athos on Thursday, the 14th of May. It was decided to convene a meeting next week in Karyes in order to determine the assistance of the armed forces in repairing the damage caused due to extreme weather conditions about a month ago.
