In an atmosphere of Paschal joy, on Bright Friday, April 17, 2026, at the Patriarchal Monastery of Saint George in Old Cairo, Patriarch Theodore II of Alexandria conferred upon the Rector of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Professor Gerasimos Siasos, the title of Archon of the Patriarchate of Alexandria.
The Rector was awarded the title of “Archon Megas Chartophylax”, an office dating back to the 6th century and considered one of the highest distinctions bestowed by the Patriarch upon a distinguished lay member of the Church, in recognition of significant service to the Church and Hellenism.
Patriarch Theodore II spoke warmly of Siasos’ personality, academic work, and scientific standing as a cardiologist, as well as his distinguished tenure as Rector of the foremost university of Hellenism, stating:
“I wish to congratulate you on behalf of all the Hierarchs of the Patriarchate, because your course is one of humanity and love.”
In his response, Gerasimos Siasos expressed deep emotion for the Patriarch’s words and for the great honor, which, as he noted, surpasses his person and reflects the prestige of the University of Athens.
He also referred to the strong historical ties between the University of Athens and the Orthodox Church since its founding nearly two centuries ago, as well as its links with the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and prominent Church figures who are graduates of its Theological School.
Addressing the Patriarch, he noted: “Your figure stands as a luminous example of patriarchal ministry. In your person, apostolic continuity, sincere love, and sacrificial offering meet. Your work on the African continent goes beyond the limits of conventional pastoral care.”
He further highlighted the role of the University of Athens in promoting science as a force of service and solidarity, while emphasizing its active participation in national and international programs.
Concluding, he stated: “Today’s great honor is an invitation to make scientific knowledge and institutional responsibility instruments of service to humanity and society, for a world of justice, solidarity, and hope.”
The ceremony was attended by Hierarchs of the Alexandrian Throne, representatives of the Greek and Cypriot Embassies in Egypt, Archons of the Patriarchate, distinguished professors, physicians, as well as family members and friends of the honoree.
Following the ceremony, Patriarch Theodore II and the Rector held a substantive meeting, discussing prospects for further strengthening cooperation between the Patriarchate of Alexandria and the University of Athens.
Among the issues discussed was the possibility of establishing a branch of the University in Egypt, in cooperation with the Patriarchate, as well as the Patriarchate’s plan to build a hospital in Alexandria, aimed at enhancing its ministry to society through healthcare services.
The meeting concluded in a spirit of mutual respect, sincere cooperation, and a shared vision for advancing education, science, and philanthropy.
