Queen Sophia of Spain visited the island of Leros on Sunday, May 30, accompanied by her sister Princess Irene and her entourage as well as the Consul of Spain in Greece, Enrique Viguera.
At the airport, Queen Sophia was greeted by Metropolitan Paisios of Leros, Kalymnos & Astypalaia and the Mayor of Leros, Michalis Kolias, the Deputy Mayors D. Kastis and A. Gkrekos as well as the President of the local Harbour Management Organisation, N. Billis.
Two young girls dressed in traditional local costumes of the island welcomed the Queen and provided her with beautiful flowers. On behalf of the local council, the mayor offered traditional gifts and a large painting with the Royal Technical Schools of Leros, while the Metropolitan presented an icon with the Virgin Mary.
Queen Sophia will visit the island of Lipsi in order to be informed of the underway works of the creation of the Aegean Marine Life Sanctuary which when it is completed, will serve as a centre for marine mammals and turtles, as well as, a permanent home for dolphins which release by captivity and as a coastal ecology research centre.
