Russian President Vladimir Putin described Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as a “holy mission” to defend the nation, according to a report by The Independent, during his Orthodox Christmas address.
In his remarks, Putin praised Russian soldiers as “warriors” acting “as if at the Lord’s behest,” blending religious language with militaristic rhetoric and calls for national unity. The speech framed the ongoing war not only as a geopolitical struggle but also as a moral and spiritual cause, invoking Orthodox Christian symbolism to legitimize Russia’s actions.
Putin’s comments came shortly after peace talks held in Paris involving Ukrainian representatives, European allies, and two U.S. envoys. The discussions aimed to establish a coordinated Western position ahead of any future engagement with Moscow.
