President of Cyprus: Turkey will also gain from a just solution to the Cyprus issue

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades, in statements on Tuesday after the completion of the ninth Greece-Cyprus-Egypt Trilateral Summit in Athens, sent a clear message to Turkey, which he urged to understand that it also stands to gain from a solution of the Cyprus issue that is based on the correct principles. “The new Turkish-Cypriot position calling for two independent states is unacceptable,” he added.

According to the Cyprus foreign ministry, the solution of the Cyprus issue must be based on the UN resolutions on Cyprus and the basic principles of international and European law.

Anastasiades said that the “determination and his joint efforts with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in the context of the EU, as well as with Egyptian President Al Sisi in the context of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation aim at a diplomatic mobilization whose ultimate aim is dialogue. He said it was unacceptable for all the countries of the Eastern Mediterranean to cooperate with each other and be pillars of stability and peace and for Turkey alone to be disrupting international law.

He also underlined that the trilateral meetings do not exclude anyone but aim at stability, adding that Turkey was “welcome to participate, provided that it respected international law and the sovereignty of its neighbors.”
