Pope Leo expressed hope on Thursday that recent positive developments between Iran and the United States could pave the way for lasting peace, following reports that the two countries are expected to formally sign a memorandum of understanding on Friday.
Responding to journalists’ questions, the Pontiff welcomed the progress achieved through diplomatic efforts and stressed the importance of dialogue and negotiation in resolving international disputes.
“Let us hope that the war has truly come to an end,” Pope Leo said. “There is at least this memorandum between Iran and the United States, which appears set to be officially signed on Friday, even though several issues still need to be resolved.”
The Pope emphasized that peaceful solutions can only be achieved through continued engagement and mutual understanding.
“We must always follow the path of dialogue and negotiation. We hope that a solution can indeed be reached,” he added.
Pope Leo also expressed his wish for a future free of nuclear weapons and called on world leaders to place the well-being of peoples above all other interests.
“The pursuit of peace must be accompanied by a concrete commitment to justice, development, and solidarity among peoples,” the Pontiff stated.
