Pope Leo XIV stated today that the well-being of the Venezuelan people must prevail following the arrest of President Nicolás Maduro, who was transferred to the United States as part of a U.S. operation. The head of the Roman Catholic Church called for ensuring the country’s sovereignty.
“The well-being of the beloved people of Venezuela must prevail over any other consideration and lead to overcoming violence and to the adoption of paths of justice and peace, while safeguarding the country’s sovereignty,” the American pope said after prayer in St. Peter’s Square in Rome.
Leo XIV also called for Venezuela to remain an independent country and for respect for human rights.
