Pope Leo XIV has sent €100,000 in emergency aid to Venezuela following the deadly earthquake that struck the country, the Vatican announced today.
According to Vatican News, the amount was released through the Apostolic Almoner’s Office, the Holy See department responsible for the Pope’s charitable works and for assisting communities facing hardship. The Vatican described the donation as an initial contribution to support relief efforts in the affected areas.
Venezuela was shaken overnight from Wednesday to Thursday by two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude. According to a provisional death toll, at least 164 people have lost their lives, while extensive material damage has also been reported.
In addition to the Catholic Church, several countries and international actors, including the United States, Iran, Cuba, and the European Union, have offered assistance to Venezuela, which was already facing a severe economic and social crisis.
The Pope’s donation is intended to support immediate humanitarian relief for those affected by the disaster.
