In a recent address to clergy of the Eastern Catholic Churches, Pope Leo XIV spoke candidly about the ongoing developments in the Middle East.
He described the dominance of power over humanitarian and international law as “shameful and undignified,” expressing sorrow that the law of the strongest is being imposed to legitimize particular interests.
“All of this is unacceptable, disgraceful for humanity and for the leaders of nations. How can some still believe, after so many centuries of history, that warfare can bring peace, and that it does not turn against those who wage it?” the pontiff questioned.
Pope Leo XIV further emphasized the futility of ignoring the peoples’ desire for peace, criticizing the false propaganda of arms buildup and the illusion that superiority can solve problems, while only fostering hatred and revenge.
He highlighted that the world is increasingly aware of how much money ends up in the pockets of arms dealers and funds that could otherwise be used to build schools and hospitals. Instead, existing institutions are destroyed.
