In one of his first major public statements on international affairs, the newly elected pontiff called for an immediate end to the violence and the facilitation of dignified humanitarian aid.
“The situation in the Gaza Strip is becoming increasingly alarming and painful,” the Pope said. “I renew my appeal for the transfer of dignified humanitarian aid and an end to the hostilities, the tragic cost of which is being paid by children, the elderly, and the sick.”
He urged the faithful and the international community to join him in prayer and compassion, invoking the intercession of the Virgin Mary: “Together with the Holy Virgin, we ask that people do not reject the gift of peace and that they disarm their hearts.”
