Pope Francis, 87, arrived today in Singapore for a 48-hour visit, marking the fourth and final destination of his extensive tour through Southeast Asia and Oceania, as reported by AFP. The Pope touched down just before 3:00 PM local time (10:00 AM Greek time) in the vibrant city-state of six million people, where he is set to deliver a key address to local authorities tomorrow, followed by officiating a Mass at a stadium.
Despite ongoing health concerns and the demanding schedule of his longest and most distant journey as pontiff, Pope Francis has appeared energetic and in good spirits, dispelling doubts about his ability to undertake such a challenging trip.
Singapore, an independent state since 1965 and one of Asia’s most advanced nations in terms of industry and technology, has faced criticism for its human rights record and its strict judicial system, which continues to enforce the death penalty. The nation’s population is primarily of Chinese descent, with significant Malay and Indian minorities. Approximately 19% of Singapore’s residents are Christian, while the majority practice Buddhism.
Earlier today, Pope Francis concluded a three-day visit to East Timor, where he met with young people in the capital. His visit was met with widespread enthusiasm, as tens of thousands of people lined the streets to greet him in a display of general euphoria.
