Switzerland has been left shocked and outraged following the circulation of a controversial photo on social media involving Muslim politician Sania Amethi. In the photo, Amethi appears to be shooting at an icon of the Virgin Mary, sparking widespread condemnation across the country.
Originally from Kosovo, Amethi herself uploaded the provocative photo, which quickly ignited a strong backlash. In response to the public outrage, she resigned from her position as leader of the Green Liberal political party and subsequently deleted the post.
Despite issuing a statement claiming she was unaware of the religious significance of the image, Amethi’s explanation failed to quell public anger. The Swiss People’s Party has since filed a lawsuit against her, citing violations of religious freedom and the right to worship.
