The Patriarchate of Romania has expressed deep concern and solidarity with the residents of Galați affected by the serious incident caused by the crash of a drone, as well as with those injured as a result of the event.
The statement comes after Romania’s Ministry of National Defence announced that a Russian attack drone struck a residential building on Romanian territory, injuring two people in the city of Galați, near the border with Ukraine along the Danube River.
According to the ministry, during the night of May 28–29, the Russian Federation resumed drone attacks against civilian targets and infrastructure in Ukraine near Romania’s river border. One of the drones entered Romanian airspace, was tracked by radar to the southern part of Galați, and subsequently crashed into the roof of an apartment building, causing a fire upon impact.
In a statement issued on May 29, the Patriarchate called on the faithful to pray for all those affected, for the recovery of the injured, and for the spiritual strength of their families and the local community during this difficult time.
“We pray to our Lord Jesus Christ, to the Most Holy Theotokos, and to all the saints to protect Romania from every danger and to grant peace, wisdom, and hope to all its citizens, as well as to those entrusted with safeguarding the lives and security of others,” the statement said.
The Patriarchate of Romania also conveyed its support to the people of the region as authorities continue to assess the consequences of the incident.
