The Romanian Patriarchate’s Basilica News Agency is launching a new visual identity and a completely rebuilt Basilica.ro on 1 September, to coincide with the start of the new Church Year. It is the first major interface overhaul since the website was last redesigned in 2016.
The timing anticipates an important milestone: in 2027, both the Basilica Media Centre and Basilica News Agency will mark 20 years since their establishment.
The previous layout retained the character of a blog, with a dominant column, a linear chronology and limited editorial hierarchy.
The new website adopts an architecture designed for a news agency: a homepage organised by categories — Patriarchal, Diocesan, External and Social — with content presented consistently through information cards and distinct reading paths. A hero section highlights the day’s leading stories, the news feed provides real-time updates, while thematic sections offer more in-depth reading.
Press releases are visually separated from editorial content, allowing readers to distinguish clearly between official communications and the Agency’s journalistic output.
The most visible change is typographic. Technical sans-serif fonts have been replaced by a modern serif typeface, giving the website both editorial credibility — drawing on the established visual language of print journalism — and a stronger visual connection with tradition.
The palette remains restrained: Basilica red is used exclusively as an accent against a warm, paper-like background that brings the reading experience closer to that of the printed press. The same visual language — paper-toned backgrounds, serif typography and restrained use of colour — aligns Basilica.ro with the Romanian Patriarchate website’s new design direction, creating continuity between the two platforms.
The brand update is a restyling, not a rebranding. The patriarchal cross, the established symbol of the Basilica Media Centre, remains at the heart of the identity in an updated and optically refined version, aligned with the identity already used by Radio TRINITAS and TRINITAS TV.
The logotype is new, while the shade of red has been recalibrated to meet current screen-reproduction standards. The most significant change is removing the “.ro” extension from the logo, aligning the identity with major international news agencies, which do not include their web domain or extension in their brand marks.
The underlying technical platform has also been rebuilt using a headless CMS architecture, separating content management from content delivery. This provides improved performance, enhanced security and the flexibility to deliver the same content across future channels.
Today’s launch is a first step toward the 2027 anniversary: a reaffirmation of Basilica News Agency’s identity as the Basilica Media Centre approaches its 20th anniversary, using the tools and visual standards of contemporary journalism.
