The Patriarchate of Jerusalem has announced with deep sorrow the passing of Archimandrite Ioustinos Mamalos, a member of the Brotherhood of the Holy Sepulchre, who devoted much of his life to the restoration of the Holy Shrine of Jacob’s Well and the construction of the Church of Saint Photini the Samaritan Woman in Nablus, Samaria.
Archimandrite Ioustinos fell asleep in the Lord on Thursday, October 1, 2026, following a prolonged illness, leaving behind an important spiritual and ecclesiastical legacy closely associated with one of the Holy Land’s historic Christian pilgrimage sites.
According to the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, the late Archimandrite dedicated many years of his ministry to the extensive restoration, maintenance and preservation of the Monastery of Jacob’s Well, guided by his deep faith and love for Holy Zion and the sacred shrines of the Holy Land.
His longstanding service was particularly associated with the comprehensive renovation of the pilgrimage site and the construction of the Church of Saint Photini the Samaritan Woman.
Through his work, Archimandrite Ioustinos made a lasting contribution to the preservation and development of this important Orthodox pilgrimage destination.
Funeral arrangements under consideration
In its announcement, the Patriarchate of Jerusalem and the Brotherhood of the Holy Sepulchre expressed their profound sorrow at his passing and offered prayers for the repose of his soul.
They prayed that the Lord would grant him rest “in the land of the living, in the dwellings of the righteous,” where “there is neither pain, nor sorrow, nor sighing, but life everlasting.”
According to the Patriarchate, arrangements are being considered for the transfer of the late Archimandrite’s body to the Holy Land, where his funeral service and burial are expected to take place.
The exact date and location of the funeral service will be announced in a subsequent statement by the Patriarchate of Jerusalem.
