One hundred years after his death, on November 8, 1920, the Patriarchate of Alexandria decided that the year 2020 would be dedicated to St. Nectarios. He devoted his life to the Church of Alexandria, where he served as Patriarchal Vicar of Cairo.
The event was officially announced today by Patriarch Theodore of Alexandria and All Africa, during the Sunday Divine Liturgy at the Holy Monastery of Saint Savvas the Sanctified in Alexandria. “Today, I declare open the celebrations for the one hundred years since the day Saint Nectarios fell asleep in the Lord. He came here, to this blessed temple, as a deacon and was ordained to priest by Patriarch Sophronius. Then, he was ordained by him to Metropolitan of Pentapolis at the St. Nicholas Cathedral in Hamzawi in Cairo. His house is still here, in which he lived during the time he served as Patriarchal Vicar of Cairo,” said Patriarch Theodore.
The Patriarch of Alexandria also spoke about the life of the Saint and referred to this year’s events that will take place in Egypt, Greece, Cyprus and South Africa in memory of St. Nectarios. He announced that the works would soon be completed and that the Monastery of the Patriarchate of Alexandria in Gargittos, Attica, would be dedicated to Saint Nektarios. “The Saints do not live only in frescoes and icons. They live on Earth, with us, every day, and protect Greece, Cyprus and Egypt,” he said.
