In a spirit of resurrectional joy and reverence, the Great Patriarchal Church of Saint George solemnly celebrated its patronal feast, honoring Saint George the Trophy-Bearer, on Bright Wednesday, April 23.
Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew attended prayerfully the festive Hierarchical Divine Liturgy, which was presided over by Metropolitan Emmanuel of Chalcedon, Elder of the Throne. Concelebrating with him were Metropolitans Irenaios of Myriophyton and Peristasis, and Joachim of Bursa.
During the service, the traditional Artoklasia was offered, with special prayers for the faithful of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in America and around the world.
At the conclusion of the Liturgy, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew addressed the congregation, making special mention of a group of visiting pilgrims led by the Roman Catholic Bishop of Linz, Manfred Scheuer. In his speech, the Patriarch expressed sorrow for the recent passing of Pope Francis, reflecting on their fraternal friendship and collaboration, particularly on ecological and social issues. He then distributed traditional red Paschal eggs to the faithful.
Among the distinguished attendees were Metropolitans Chrysostomos of Myra and Theodoros of Seleucia, Bishops Adrianos of Halicarnassus and Smaragdos of Daphnousia, as well as Roman Catholic Archbishops Giuseppe Satriano (Bari and Bitonto) and Maurizio Aloise (Rossano and Cariati), accompanied by clergy from their respective dioceses. Members of the Order of Archons and numerous faithful were also present.
Later in the day, the Patriarch hosted a festive Paschal luncheon at the Marasleios Mansion, inviting local monastics of the City to share in the celebration with their spiritual father in a warm and joyful Easter gathering.
