In a heartfelt and joyous ceremony, Pope and Patriarch Theodore II of Alexandria and All Africa presided over the opening of the 2024–2025 school year at the historic Tositsaio Primary School. The event, held on Thursday, September 12, 2024, was filled with excitement as students, teachers, and parents eagerly welcomed the Patriarch, rushing to receive his blessing. True to his warm nature, Patriarch Theodore II greeted everyone with a smile, speaking intimately with the children, parents, and educators.
The ceremony began with the Patriarch performing the Sanctification Service, offering prayers for a fruitful and successful school year. In a symbolic gesture, he sprinkled basil leaves dipped in holy water over the crowd, wishing them strength and health for the year ahead.
Reflecting on his 20 years as the head of the Church of Alexandria, the Patriarch shared a touching message:
“My children, it has been 20 years since our Lord called me to lead the Church of Alexandria. This is my home, from where I depart and to where I return. Before me, I see thousands of children and schools across the continent of Africa, the future. Today, I see my child Markos here, and in his face, I see all the children of Africa. We estimate there are about 80,000 children in Africa whom we are trying to help provide with a better future. To all of you, whether you were born in Alexandria or our beloved Greece, I wish you great progress.”
The Consul General of Greece in Alexandria, Ioannis Pyrgakis, also addressed the attendees, extending his best wishes for health, academic success, and personal growth. He reassured the community that his office at the Consulate General is always open to offer support to students, teachers, and parents. He concluded with hope that this academic year will be fruitful and that the children will gain the knowledge and education essential for their future success.
