Patriarch Porfirije of Serbia officiated the Holy Hierarchal Liturgy in the side chapel of Saint John the Theologian at the Faculty of Orthodox Theology of the University of Belgrade on May 1, 2021, on Great Saturday.
The Divine Liturgy was concelebrated by Archimandrite Prokopije (Tajar), Dean of the Faculty of Orthodox Theology archpriest Dr. Zoran Rankovic, hieromonk Sava (Bundalo), protonamesnik Dragan Popovic, presbyter Borisa Sanjic, deacon Radomir Vrucinic and Vladimir Antic, subdeacons Vladimir Jelic and Njegos Stikic.
“All who listened to the word of Christ and followed it saw Him as something unusual and expected a lot from Him. However, He suffered and died on the cross.
Everyone ran away, everyone left him, only a few women remained. These are exactly the women to whom the Risen Lord will appear first, those who will be the heralds of His Resurrection,” Patriarch Porfirije said.
“On Holy Saturday, we are waiting for the fulfillment of His words, and they have already been fulfilled. Because he descended into hell, in fact, the wicked demonic forces swallowed the bait, took in their jaws the One who is in no way a slave of time and space, transience, or even death, who in no way can be subordinated to the unclean forces.
And He, having entered hell, already now breaks with Him the chains of hell and takes all those from Adam and Eve to our days, the righteous who longed for the truth for eternity for love, into His arms and brings them into the mystery of the Kingdom of Heaven.”
