On Palm Sunday, April 5, 2026, in the morning, Patriarch Porfirije of Serbia presided over the Divine Liturgy and delivered the homily at the Church of Saint Sava in Vračar.
“Behold, accompanied by a multitude, the Lord goes to the holy city of Jerusalem, riding on a donkey, wishing to show that His Kingdom is not of this world, but that it is the Kingdom of God, a Kingdom from above, which descends among us so that we may become citizens of that Kingdom.
It comes down to us in that the Lord became everything that we are, identifying with us in all things except sin. Therefore, He goes to Jerusalem to unite Himself with us even in death, in order to destroy death, to defeat our greatest and final enemy, and to grant us eternal life, embracing us and making us part of His Body, part of His Church, part of His Kingdom,” said the Patriarch in his homily.
“The Lord enters Jerusalem humbly on a donkey, thus once again confronting a mentality that outwardly observes the law and commandments, but inwardly remains unchanged—proud, self-centered, and hypocritical. This is Pharisaic faith and piety.
Christ does not fit into such a mindset. He comes so that we may enter into His reality, into His embrace—not to reshape Him according to our own image and logic. This is something we must guard against today as well: that our faith does not become an ideology,” he emphasized.
Concelebrating with His Holiness were Bishop Ilarion of Novo Brdo and members of the clergy.
