Patriarch Porfirije of Serbia met on July 10, 2026, at the Patriarchal Palace in Belgrade with Matilda Mordt, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in the Republic of Serbia.
During the meeting, His Holiness informed the distinguished guest about the difficult situation, challenges, and pressures faced by the Serbian people in Kosovo and Metohija.
Thanking Ms. Mordt for her visit, Patriarch Porfirije emphasized that the Serbian Orthodox Church, remaining faithful to its Gospel mission, seeks to bear witness in today’s world—marked by numerous challenges and unrest—to the values of peace, mutual understanding, and brotherly love among people and nations.
The Patriarch noted that the Church of Saint Sava fulfills this mission primarily through concrete care for individuals, especially the poor, the sick, refugees, and all those in need.
Ms. Mordt briefed the Patriarch on the work and activities of the United Nations system, particularly on projects being implemented in the Republic of Serbia, as well as on the broader engagement of the international organization around the world. These efforts are aimed at protecting human rights and the environment, while promoting sustainable development, social security, and humanitarian cooperation.
In this context, the participants also discussed the activities of the Religious Charitable Trusteeship of the Archdiocese of Belgrade-Karlovci, as well as possibilities for establishing cooperation with United Nations organizations and bodies in the fields of humanitarian work and social support.
Also present at the meeting were Bishop Petar of Toplica, Vicar Bishop; Ms. Ana Janković Jovanović and Ms. Jovana Mehandžić Đurđić, officials of the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator in the Republic of Serbia; and Deacon Nikola Kostić, Secretary of the Office of the Serbian Patriarch.
