Patriarch Daniel of Romania emphasized on Sunday that “the merciful love of Jesus liberates people from the dominion of evil spirits,” during his homily at the historic Chapel of St. George at the Patriarchal Residence.
Patriarch Daniel participated in the Divine Liturgy on Sunday, July 5, at the Chapel of St. George at the Patriarchal Residence.
Reflecting on the Gospel passage of the healing of the two demon-possessed men in the region of the Gadarenes, the Patriarch explained that the presence of Christ’s holiness and merciful love itself becomes a source of torment for demons.
“The Lord Jesus Christ judges and torments the demons not by rebuking them, but by His very presence among the people possessed by them, through the contrast between His merciful love and the violent malice of the demons toward human beings,” he said.
Patriarch Daniel noted that the Savior came to heal the souls of the two possessed men, who had become estranged from their own personhood through demonic influence.
Commenting on the destruction of the herd of swine after the demons entered them, the Patriarch said the inhabitants of Gadara were more concerned about their material loss than about the liberation and healing of their fellow citizens.
“Instead of rejoicing that two men enslaved by demons had been healed and showing gratitude to Jesus, the inhabitants asked Him to leave their region,” he said.
The Patriarch explained that Christ’s permission for the demons to enter the swine also served as an indirect rebuke of the people’s excessive attachment to material gain, which had become harmful to their spiritual life.
Patriarch Daniel further stressed that Christ’s work of healing and liberation continues in the life of the Church.
“The work of the Lord Jesus Christ in freeing people from evil spirits continues in His Church, His mystical Body, as a ministry of healing and liberation from violent demonic influences and enslaving passions,” he said.
He also highlighted the importance of daily prayer and the sign of the Cross, noting that they help believers resist evil influences.
In the final part of his sermon, the Romanian Patriarch underlined that strong faith, fervent prayer, fasting, repentance, confession, and participation in the Holy Mysteries strengthen believers in their spiritual struggle and help them overcome fear of evil spirits.
Concluding his homily, he called on the faithful to pray for the strength to overcome temptations and to show mercy toward others, especially those who are unable to pray for themselves.
