Patriarch Daniel of Romania stressed the importance of preserving both the unity of the Church and the Orthodox faith during his sermon on the Sunday of the Holy Fathers of the First Ecumenical Council.
The Patriarch attended the Divine Liturgy celebrated on Sunday at the Chapel of Saint George at the Patriarchal Residence, where he reflected on the spiritual significance of the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea and the Church’s unity.
“It is not enough to speak about the unity of the Church, we must pray for it,” Patriarch Daniel said.
The Patriarch explained that the Church intentionally placed the commemoration of the Holy Fathers on the Sunday between the Ascension and Pentecost in order to emphasize the connection between the confession of the true faith and the unity of the Church.
He warned that division and spiritual confusion remain constant dangers for Christians, stressing that “the devil seeks to sow hostility among people and separate them.”
“We must pray so that we may preserve and confess the true Christian faith and cultivate together the right Christian way of life, thus affirming the holy unity of the Church,” he added.
Patriarch Daniel also emphasized that the Orthodox faith is not preserved “in isolation or division,” but in communion with the Church through common faith, confession, and life.
Highlighting the challenges of the modern world, he called on the faithful to preserve the apostolic faith proclaimed by the Holy Fathers, describing it as “the basis of the unity of the Church, the light of Christian life, and the foundation of salvation and eternal life.”
The Patriarch concluded by encouraging believers to grow in faith and holiness in order to attain the joy promised by Christ in the Gospel.
