“Gifts multiply through blessing and distribution, or by being shared with people,” Patriarch Daniel of the Romanian Orthodox Church explained on Sunday at the historic St. George Chapel of the Patriarchal Residence.
Quoting St. John Chrysostom, Patriarch Daniel said that the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves is not only a manifestation of divine power but also a lesson in communion.
“In that same deserted place, the Lord Jesus Christ gave the crowds the same simple food and the same portion to each person, in order to teach them humility, self-restraint and love, so that they might regard one another as equals and consider all earthly goods to be held in common.”
Patriarch Daniel explained that the miracle reveals that God’s blessing bears fruit wherever there is a willingness to give.
“The miracle of the multiplication of the loaves was a concrete reality, not an illusion, as St. John Chrysostom emphasises. The twelve baskets of leftovers show that Jesus wanted all the disciples, including Judas Iscariot, to know His power.”
Food for the soul
The Primate of the Romanian Orthodox Church stressed that the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves actually begins with the spiritual nourishment of the crowds.
“We must first nourish our souls by listening to the word of God and seek from Christ the healing of our souls.”
“The Lord Jesus Christ first offers those who come to Him food for the soul and healing from illness, and only afterwards food for the body. The crowds who came to Jesus to hear His word and receive healing were the ones who later rejoiced in the multiplication of the loaves and fish.”
“The Orthodox Church has ordained that we fast, abstaining from food and drink before participating in the Divine Liturgy, so that we may first nourish our souls by listening to the word of God proclaimed in the Holy Gospel and then receive Christ Himself in the Holy Eucharist.”
Patriarch Daniel explained that people today are called to follow the same path by first coming to Christ to hear His word and receive inner healing.
“We must nourish our souls with the light of eternal life contained in the Holy Scriptures, the Holy Mysteries, and the Church’s sacred services.”
“The sanctification of the human person begins with the sanctification of the soul through God’s grace, and from the sanctified soul holiness is transmitted to the body, since the mortal human body is destined for the general resurrection on the Last Day.”
The Church’s life of communion
Patriarch Daniel said that the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves is the foundation of the Church’s charitable ministry.
“Alongside the common prayer of the Church, the good work of helping those in need was also organised. Therefore, philanthropy became part of the Church’s charitable ministry and has its roots in God’s merciful love.”
“All Christian philanthropy, or the Church’s humble and merciful love toward people, springs from Christians’ spiritual communion with the Son of God, who became man out of love for humanity and for their salvation. Therefore, the Church never separates its social activity from its spiritual mission.”
Patriarch Daniel emphasised that material goods are gifts received from God and should be managed responsibly and shared with those in need.
“We must be good stewards and responsible, valuing God’s gifts even when we enjoy an abundance of material goods.”
“Whatever gift someone brings to the Church, no matter how small, once it is blessed by Jesus and distributed by His ministers, it becomes a great joy for many people.”
The Patriarch concluded by saying that the Gospel of the Sunday calls Christians to unite prayer with charity and liturgical life with care for their neighbour, because “the blessed gifts brought to the Church by some become a joy for the entire community.”
